DeFrank’s Rug Rat Caddis

Not a fly pattern I use much due to the complexity, but it certainly has a place in my fly box for those times when all else fails and you need some kind of edge to produce a fish or two. It sports a latex body for segmentation, biot back for contrast, wire rib for durability, eyes and cdc which really enhances the life-like buggy appearance.

Defrank’s Grim Reaper

Defrank’s Grim Reaper

Additional DescriptionMore Details

Featured in “John Nagy’s Steelhead Guide’s 4th Edition”. I designed this pattern early on in my Steelhead Fishing Days back in the 80’s. I loved fishing wet flies and wanted something with a little subtle bling and durable. I ‘ve produced several color variants thru the years including a chartreuse, blue, silver, rusty, black, green, red and purple, but I’ve found the original Grim Reaper to far exceed the fish catching ability. It holds a special place in my heart that still reminds me of some steller days of fishing.

Defrank’s Blue Steel Caddis

Defrank’s Blue Steel Caddis

Additional DescriptionMore Details

This is one of my best producing patterns. I designed it back in 1999 just looking for a good pattern that had some blue color and flash in it for low light conditions, but retaining durability to withstand the beating a Steelhead can bring to a fly. It has surpassed my expectations by putting fish to the net in all types of scenarios. Since the day of its conception to present date, it has been featured in several magazine articles including John Nagy’s Steelhead Guide 4th Edition as one of the Dirty Dozen Patterns used by anglers and guides fishing the Great Lakes Tributaries for Steelhead and Salmon.

Copper Spot Caddis

Copper Spot Caddis    (Click here to see how it looks wet)

Additional DescriptionMore Details

I designed and field tested this pattern of mine in 2011 and did extremely well with it. It has a very great looking buggy appearance when wet. Contributing to this effect is the copper bead tied in at the thorax adding weight and a touch of shimmer coming thru the rabbit collar as it lays over the body.
